Proposal for a Resolution on viral hepatitis and Action Plan for its conducting accepted
On 10th March 2009, the 19th (thematic) meeting of the Committee for Health and Social Welfare of Croatian Parliament was held on the theme "Problems of viral hepatitis in the Republic of Croatia", resulting with the acceptance of a proposed Resolution (Declaration) on viral hepatitis and an Action plan for its conducting.
The president of our Association MS Tatjana Reic addressed the assembly as the ELPA vice president and thanked them for recognizing the importance of viral hepatitis issues. Back in 2003, Hepatos introduced the then Parliament's Committee for Health to their work, and has ever since continued to demand that viral hepatitis be recognized as a public-health problem, which requires a multidisciplinary approach: a cooperation between the health sector and other mechanisms of public activity, non-government sector above all, with as much independent debates about healthcare for the hepatitis patients.
The Resolution and Action plan will be the first official documents in the Republic of Croatia on viral hepatitis that will hopefully encourage development of official reports on prevalence of viral hepatitis in our country. This would contribute to the European Commission for drafting proposal and European Council to adopt an Recommendation on targeted Screening of hepatitis B and C, as called for in Written Declaration on Hepatitis C adopted by EU Parliament on March 2007.
The Committee has recommended to the Government and the Parliament to opportunely accept the Resolution and Action Plan at the Parliament session on the World Hepatitis Day 19 05.
